Benefits of Karate
Building physical, cognitive, and self-regulation skills with karate
Martial arts training has numerous benefits for its students. Kids who participate in the martial arts gain physical, cognitive and self-regulation skills, build character and learn values. These can be applied in school, home, relationships and life.
The mind and body are conditioned together when we practice martial arts. The two are intricately connected and each one affects the other. When I combine my experience and knowledge of karate and occupational therapy, kids can benefit in unique ways in the following areas:
Confidence and self esteem
Resilience and learning to overcome challenges
Setting goals and working to achieve them
Avoiding physical confrontation and defending oneself if needed
Learning about respect, integrity, humility, honor, compassion
Self-discipline
Self-regulation, sensory modulation, ability to function in a structured environment
Reduced stress and anxiety through breathing and mindfulness
Improved performance in school
Increased attention and ability to follow directions
Strength, flexibility, endurance, balance
Motor planning/coordination, moving body in rhythm, reaction timing
Body awareness, spatial awareness
Visual motor and memory skills
Friendships and social skills
