About Champion Kids Karate
Why CKK?
At Champion Kids Karate, I combine martial arts and occupational therapy (OT), which blend well to create a unique experience. The art, sport and discipline of karate meet the OT scope of addressing motor coordination, balance skills, body awareness, attention, visual skills, timing and rhythm, sensory processing, self-regulation, cognitive skills, anxiety strategies and more. Kids learn so much when they’re active, having fun, and encouraged, and are more likely to engage for extended periods of time in activities that can help them reach their potential. My goal is to provide a fun and challenging experience for kids with diverse needs, their family and friends.
Champion Kids Karate offers smaller class sizes to meet your child’s needs. Students have the opportunity to rank up to higher belt levels, participate in karate tournaments and attend day camps. It is my goal to meet each student wherever they are, provide instruction in karate and sparring techniques at their level of participation, provide opportunities to build various skills and help increase self-esteem. I encourage friendships and want students to experience the joy of participating in the martial arts.
Champion Kids Karate welcomes kids with all physical and cognitive abilities and diagnoses who meet the requirements listed below. These requirements are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of every student. Each student:
must not be a danger to themself or others inside or outside class
must not prevent others from participation in classes, tournaments, camps and other related events
be cooperative and able to follow directions (an assistant or volunteer may be provided to aid in this area)
if deemed necessary by the instructor, must have medical clearance from a doctor for participation in sparring
Classes
Ages 5-18.
Class sizes generally range from 1 – 10 students in order to provide more individualized attention. A class may have an assistant and/or volunteer, depending on the needs of the class.
Classes will focus on a variety or areas, including but not limited to:
karate techniques and sparring
conditioning and balance exercises
strengthening and coordination
sensory exercises and activities
basic history of karate
respect for self and others
attitude and self-discipline
sportsmanship
attention and listening skills
individual and team participation
Ranking up in belt levels
Belt rank tests will be offered at the end of each session. These tests will include techniques, physical conditioning exercises and some basic history questions learned in class. In order to rank up a student must participate in one karate tournament.
Tournaments and camps
Champion Kids Karate is affiliated with Hill Country Karate (HCK). Students have opportunities to participate in karate tournaments and day camps hosted by HCK throughout the year.
Tournaments
Tournaments are offered one time each session.. Champion Kids Karate students have the option of sparring in the general rings or in an adaptive martial arts ring. In general rings, students will be placed based on belt color, age, gender, and height. Additional considerations will be made in the adaptive ring. Based on my years of experience, I will determine the appropriate ring for your child’s individual needs, as safety is a primary concern.
Registration for tournaments can be completed on the HCK website.
Camps
These are optional, but lots of fun! And kids can bring a friend! Camps include Weapons Camp, Self-Defense Camp and Judo Camp. Registration and fee for these events are completed at the door.
